Considering overseas volunteering
This section includes guidance on:
- Checking that organisations and opportunities meet the University’s criteria for overseas volunteering;
- Ensuring opportunities are ethical, sustainable and sound;
- Choosing the most suitable way of working with an international volunteering organisation, for example working in partnership with an external organisation or brokering opportunities on their behalf;
- Seeking sign-off for new international activity;
- Resources required including staff support and project costs.
All international volunteering activity should have the necessary support from the University including the relevant Heads of the Faculty, School or Division. Approval for new international projects should be sought via the International Mobility Group.
When planning to advertise or run overseas volunteering projects please consider whether the opportunities fall under the University’s definition of volunteering. If the activity that you are considering does not meet the definition, it may come under employability activity or field trips. Do get in touch and we can provide advice on the best way forward.
