International volunteering criteria

The Volunteering and Community Engagement Team has developed a checklist for colleagues to use when considering advertising or running international volunteering opportunities.

The list has been developed in line with best practice and helps to ensure that the organisations and opportunities are ethical, sustainable and well supported. This includes checks on:

  • The organisation set up, experience and reputation;
  • The projects and the roles students would be undertaking;
  • The involvement of the local community;
  • The location of the volunteering, accommodation and living conditions;
  • Recruitment processes and equal opportunities;
  • Health and safety policies, processes and risk assessments;
  • The support provided to volunteers for pre-departure preparation, in-country and on return.
