Ways of working

There are various ways to advertise or run overseas volunteering projects.

  • Running a University project in partnership with an external organisation: The project is established and delivered jointly by a School or Division at the University and an organisation working overseas. The project might be developed to meet a specific need or be for students with particular skills.
  • Working closely with an organisation that has existing volunteering opportunities: The opportunites are run and managed by an external organisation and the School or Division works closely with them to engage students in their project(s) in an agreed way, such as having a joint recruitment process or pre-departure support.
  • Brokerage: The University, School or Divison advertises a project on behalf of an international volunteering organisation.

The nature of the relationship with the volunteer organisation will determine what kind of working agreement is required. For example, partnership projects may require an MOU. The University Contracts Team is able to offer advice and assistance with all aspects of contract requirements. Agreements might include the roles and responsibilities of each project partner for example in relation to staff support, project administration, logistics, recruitment and management of volunteers, health and safety provision and relevant policies.

If you are considering the brokerage arrangement the Volunteering and Comunity Engagement Team can provide guidance on the requirements, for example checking they meet the criteria and using Volunteer Hub.
