Safeguarding and DBS checks
Where volunteering projects engage with children and young people or vulnerable adults a safeguarding policy must be in place.
Where the University and organisation are jointly responsible for the volunteering project the safeguarding policy should be developed in partnership with the partner organisation and in line with University policy.
Students volunteering with children or vulnerable adults may need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The University of Manchester is a registered body with the Disclosure and Barring Service and has an established process. For further information or to find out who is the DBS counter-signatory for your School or Division, contact the Compliance and Risk Office.
If an international student has been in the UK for less than three years they may not be able to get a DBS check. The Home Office provides guidance on the requirements for each nationality.
